Chevron is accepting online applications for the position of Counsel/Senior Counsel in Duo Tower, Singapore through 21 May 2024 at 11:59 p.m. (SGT).

The successful candidate must be able to provide timely, practical, efficient and high quality legal advice to Chevron’s crude oil, LPG, carbon and refined products trading and operations teams (on both physical and financial trades), their support functions and business management. Whilst the primary scope will be to support the aforesaid teams in Asia Pacific (namely Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia), there may be occasions where the successful candidate will be called upon to support the legal colleagues in other S&T trading hubs in Dubai, London and Houston.

The required legal work includes:

  • Reviewing, negotiating and drafting physical and financial supply and trading contracts, including transactions with international oil companies, state–owned oil companies and oil trading companies.

  • Reviewing, negotiating and drafting agreements for the sale and purchase of carbon credits.

  • Advising clients on legal issues associated with purchasing, selling and marketing crude oil, carbon credits, LPG and refined products, including structured transactions and trades concluded on the Platts window.

  • Advising clients on legal issues associated with storage of crude oil, LPG and refined products in terminals, floating storage and transportation of these products in ships and pipelines.

  • Advising clients on legal issues relating to international and cross-border transaction, including joint ventures and financing transactions.

  • Providing advice and training on regulatory compliance and compliance with Chevron’s corporate policies.

  • Advising clients on legal issues associated with trading on crude oil/products exchanges, such as ICE, CME/NYMEX and carbon exchanges like CIX.

  • Providing legal advice to Chevron’s Compliance, Finance, Contracts, Tax, Credit, and Government and Public Affairs specialists in the supply and trading context.

  • Handling the life-cycle of disputes relating to the supply and trading of crude oil, petroleum products, LPG and carbon credits.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Review, negotiate and draft contracts related to trading transactions, including physical and financial purchase and sale agreements, offtake agreements, marketing agreements, master agreements, terminal storage agreements and pipeline transportation agreements.

  • Negotiate resolution of claims (e.g. failure to perform, shortage, off-specification product, demurrage) associated with trading and shipping contracts and support litigation efforts as required if the matter is escalated.

  • Provide advice and training on compliance and risk exposure under relevant laws and regulations relating to oil trading and shipping, including: competition law, market manipulation rules, international trade, import/export rules, anti-corruption laws, corporate governance, anti-boycott and sanctioned parties and internal tax/legal policies.

  • Provide advice to other Chevron support functions such as Compliance, Finance, Contracts, Tax, Credit, and Public Affairs in the supply and trading, and shipping context.

  • Provide advice and guidance to, and collaborate with, lawyers in other Chevron business units (in Singapore as well as other jurisdictions/time zones), insuring maximum effective use of in-house legal resources.

  • Consult, in a cost effective manner, with outside counsel when necessary and appropriate in accordance with Chevron’s Outside Counsel Guidelines.

  • Participate on internal teams and committees, as assigned.

  • International travel will occasionally be required.

  • Availability for calls and conferencing outside normal work hours will occasionally be required.

The successful candidate may also be expected to:

  • Handling the life-cycle of disputes relating to shipping matters.

  • Review, negotiate and draft shipping-related contracts including but not limited to voyage charterparties, time charterparties, contracts of affreightment and pool agreements.

Required Qualifications:

  • Lawyer qualified to practice in Singapore or UK. Dual qualification preferred.

  • At least 7 years of experience in international crude oil, LPG and refined products trading. Experience in shipping law (including chartering and dispute management) and/or carbon trading would be a plus.

  • Familiarity with Incoterms and general terms and conditions of oil majors, national oil companies and major trading houses for the sale and purchase of crude oil and petroleum products respectively is preferred.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to respond quickly and decisively to client needs in a rapidly-changing and fast-paced highly competitive trading environment, while at all times emphasizing compliance with all applicable laws and internal policies and guidelines.

  • Ability to effectively manage a high volume of complex and diverse matters concurrently, provide support and advice to multiple commercial and stakeholder teams and manage conflicting and evolving work demands.

  • Capable of working in a team environment and partnering with other supply & trading and shipping lawyers, supply & trading and shipping clients, Chevron SMEs, other Chevron in-house counsels, in-house counsels from counterparties, outside counsel and Chevron support staff.

  • Sound understanding of corporate and legal structures and associated policies and practices.

    Relocation Options: Relocation will not be considered within Chevron parameters. International Considerations:
